Reviving the Welcome | A Porch Renovation

This couple came to us with a clear goal: to turn their dark, low front porch into a welcoming extension of their home that felt aligned with the craftsman charm of their neighborhood.

Before: The Starting Point

Their existing porch had a roofline that continued from the main house, creating a low overhang that forced them to duck as they approached the front door. Not only did this make the entry feel uninviting, but it also blocked natural light from pouring into their large front windows—leaving their living room dim even on sunny afternoons.

Planning and Inspiration

They envisioned a porch that felt open, warm, and true to the craftsman style. Their inspiration photos featured classic column details, a simple color palette, and rich wood tones. (We’ve gathered similar ideas on our Pinterest board —check it out if you’re dreaming up your own porch refresh!)

The Process

We started by presenting three design options, each with their own finish scheme and varying cost implications so they could mix and match elements that fit their budget and priorities. This gave them the flexibility to choose what mattered most.

We even provide options that take the craftsman look to the next level, showing them some added touches if they want to take their renovation up a notch.

The Transformation

Ultimately, they chose to move forward with a new roofline that lifted the porch ceiling and completely changed the feel of the entry. Now, the space is open and bright, with plenty of natural light streaming into the home. The homeowners added a cozy porch swing, which instantly made the space feel more lived-in and inviting.

We carried the original wood tones from inside the home to the porch ceiling, columns, and a new craftsman-style front door. This detail helped the transition from exterior to interior feel seamless and intentional. New lighting at the door and ceiling adds both ambiance and safety—perfect for evenings spent swinging together or simply leaving a light on overnight.

To make the space even more functional, we added power near the door and at the ceiling for holiday decorations. It’s a small touch, but one that makes seasonal styling a breeze.

And perhaps one of the most unexpected compliments? The delivery workers! Several of them have thanked the homeowners for the renovation—grateful they no longer have to duck under the low roofline to drop off packages. A win for everyone.

This porch now feels like a true extension of them and their home —welcoming, warm, and full of character.
